Suit for Men: 2 Piece, 3 Piece and Coat Pant Guide
A good suit is the most useful formal garment a man can own. Here is how to choose between 2 piece, 3 piece and tuxedo, which colours to buy first, and how to check the fit before you pay.

In India, a suit for men is often simply called a coat pant. Whatever you call it, it is the backbone of formal wear: interviews, board meetings, receptions, court weddings and formal dinners. Britannica traces the modern lounge suit to around 1860, when it began as informal wear, and the V&A notes it became popular in the 1860s because of its easy comfort before replacing the frock coat in the early twentieth century.
That history explains why a good suit should feel comfortable, not stiff. This guide covers the types of suits, the details that matter, and a simple fit check.
Types of Suits for Men
2 piece suit
A matching jacket and trousers. The 2 piece suit for men is the most versatile: wear it as a set for work and weddings, or split the jacket and trousers with other pieces. Best first purchase for most men.
3 piece suit
A three piece suit for men adds a matching waistcoat. It looks more formal and lets you take off the jacket at a long reception without looking underdressed. Popular as 3 piece suits for mens wedding receptions and winter events.
Tuxedo
A tuxedo for men is evening formal wear, usually black or midnight blue with satin or grosgrain facings and a shawl or peak lapel. The village of Tuxedo Park in New York tells the story of men appearing in tailless coats at its 1886 Autumn Ball, while noting the true origin is uncertain. Wear a tuxedo suit for men to black-tie receptions and galas.
Prince suit
A long, fitted coat ending at mid-thigh with a stand or notched collar, between a suit and a sherwani. A prince suit for men suits receptions and suits taller men best.
Safari suit
A short-sleeved or full-sleeved jacket with patch pockets and a belt, worn with matching trousers. The safari suit for men was once common Indian office wear and now has a retro appeal. Keep it to light colours and summer events.
Other searches people mix up
A Punjabi suit for men usually means a kurta and salwar set, closer to a kurta pajama than a coat pant. A Jaipuri suit usually refers to printed cotton kurta sets. A night suit for men is sleepwear, not formal wear.

Suit Colours: Which to Buy First
| Colour | Best for | Shirt pairings |
|---|---|---|
| Navy / blue suit | Office, interviews, weddings | White, light blue, pink |
| Charcoal / grey suit | Office, formal meetings | White, light blue, lavender |
| Black suit | Evening events, receptions | White, black |
| Brown suit | Daytime, smart casual | Cream, light blue |
| Beige or white suit | Summer and beach weddings | White, pastel |
Start with navy, then charcoal. A black suit for men or black coat pant for men looks best at night and is less flexible for office use. A grey suit for men suits almost every skin tone. Our colour combinations guide has suit, shirt and tie pairings.
Details That Matter: Lapels, Buttons, Construction
- Notch lapel: the most common style, usually on single-breasted jackets. Right for business suits.
- Peak lapel: points rise toward the shoulders; usual on double-breasted jackets and more formal.
- Shawl lapel: rounded, mainly on tuxedos and dinner jackets.
- Buttons: single-breasted jackets usually have two or three buttons; double-breasted typically have six, with only half functional.
Construction is commonly described in three tiers. Fused jackets have interlining glued to the shell, which can bubble over time. Half-canvas jackets have a sewn canvas chest and are often described as more breathable and longer-lasting. Full-canvas jackets have canvas sewn throughout, including the lapels. For a first suit, a good fused or half-canvas jacket that fits you is a sensible start.
Fabric is the other choice. Raymond, founded as Raymond Woollen Mill in 1925, describes itself as a leading maker of worsted suiting fabric, and worsted wool is a common suit cloth because it drapes cleanly.

How a Suit Should Fit: Seven Checks
- Shoulders: the seam ends at your shoulder bone, with no dent or overhang. This is the hardest part to alter, so get it right first.
- Collar: the jacket collar sits against your shirt collar with no gap at the back of the neck.
- Chest: buttoned, the jacket lies flat without an X-shaped pull around the button.
- Jacket length: covers your seat; roughly level with your thumb knuckle when arms hang.
- Sleeves: show about a quarter to half inch of shirt cuff.
- Trouser waist: sits comfortably without a belt doing all the work.
- Trouser break: no break or a slight break for a modern look; a half break is more traditional. A full break looks long on most men.

How to Wear a Suit
For a formal suit for men at the office, wear a crisp shirt and a tie in a solid or small pattern. Button the top button of a two-button jacket when standing and undo it when sitting. Leave the bottom button open always.
For weddings, a 3 piece suit for men wedding look or a velvet jacket adds occasion. Our wedding dress for men guide shows how suits fit into the full wedding wardrobe. For office dress codes, see the formal dress for men guide.
A blazer suit for men is not the same as a suit: a blazer is designed to be worn with unmatched trousers. If you want one jacket that does both jobs, read our blazer for men guide. And for trousers on their own, see the formal trousers guide.
Suit Care
Hang suits on broad, shaped hangers so the shoulders keep their form. Brush wool suits after wearing and let them rest a day before wearing again. Dry clean sparingly, since frequent cleaning can wear the fabric; steaming removes most creases. Rotate two suits if you wear them often in Indian heat. Check the care label, where a circle symbol means professional cleaning and a crossed-out symbol means that treatment must not be used.
Questions men ask
Which suit colour is best for men?
Navy is the most versatile first suit colour, followed by charcoal grey. Both work for office, interviews and weddings, and suit most skin tones. A black suit looks sharp at evening events but is less flexible for daytime and work. Add brown, beige or patterned suits once you have the basics.
What is the difference between a 2 piece and 3 piece suit?
A 2 piece suit is a matching jacket and trousers. A 3 piece suit adds a matching waistcoat, which makes it more formal and lets you remove the jacket and still look dressed. The 2 piece is more versatile; the 3 piece suits weddings, receptions and winter.
What is the difference between a suit and a tuxedo?
A tuxedo is evening formal wear with satin or grosgrain on the lapels and trouser stripe, usually a shawl or peak lapel, and is worn with a bow tie. A regular suit has plain fabric lapels and is worn with a normal tie for business and day events.
How should a coat pant fit a man?
The jacket shoulder seam should end at your shoulder bone, the buttoned front should lie flat, the jacket should cover your seat, and sleeves should show a little shirt cuff. Trousers should sit comfortably at the waist and end with no break or a slight break over your shoes.
Which suit is best for a wedding?
For guests, a navy, charcoal or midnight blue suit is safe. For receptions and winter weddings, a 3 piece suit or velvet jacket adds formality. The groom often wears a tuxedo or dark 3 piece at the reception. For the ceremony itself, most Indian grooms choose a sherwani.
Can I wear a suit jacket as a blazer?
Sometimes. Plain navy or grey suit jackets in smooth fabric can look like the bottom half is missing when worn with jeans. Textured fabrics and patch pockets make better separates. If you want one jacket for both roles, choose a navy blazer with a matching trouser option.
