T-Shirts for Men: Polo, Crew, Oversized and More
A good t shirt for men is not about the print. It is about neckline, fabric weight and where the shoulder seam lands. Here is how to choose each type and wear it well.

The T-shirt is the most worn piece of clothing for most men in India. It is what you wear to college, to the gym, on a train journey and on a lazy Sunday. Because it is so simple, small details make a big difference: a collar that holds shape, a hem that does not ride up, a fabric that survives the monsoon.
This guide breaks down the main T-shirt types, from crew neck to polo to oversized, explains fabrics and GSM, and shows how to make basic tees look intentional. If you want to dress up from here, our shirts guide covers collared shirts and our colour combinations guide helps you pair them.
Types of T-shirts for men
Crew neck T-shirt
The classic round neck. It suits almost everyone and is the base of any casual wardrobe. Wear it alone with jeans or under an open shirt or jacket. The neckband should sit flat against the base of the neck, not sag.
V-neck T-shirt
The V lengthens a short or thick neck and opens up a round face. Keep the V shallow; a deep plunge looks dated. Good under a blazer when you want a relaxed evening look.
Polo T-shirt
A knitted shirt with a soft collar and a two or three button placket. Polo t shirts for men sit between a tee and a shirt, so they work for casual Fridays, golf days, family outings and travel. A collar t shirt for men looks neatest in plain colours with a collar that does not curl.
Henley
A collarless tee with a short button placket. It looks a little more grown-up than a crew neck and layers well under an overshirt.
Oversized T-shirt
Dropped shoulders, wider body and longer sleeves. It is a streetwear shape, so balance it with straight or relaxed bottoms such as cargo pants or wide jeans. Oversized on top with skinny jeans tends to look unbalanced.
Full sleeve T-shirt
A full sleeve t shirt for men is useful for Delhi or Bengaluru winter mornings, for sun protection on bike rides and for layering under a sleeveless jacket. Choose a slightly thicker cotton so it does not cling.

Cotton, blends and gym fabrics
Cotton t shirts for men: cotton is the seed-hair fibre of plants of the genus Gossypium and is the everyday choice: soft, easy to wash and comfortable in most weather. Combed and ring-spun cottons feel smoother than basic open-end yarns.
Cotton with stretch: spandex (elastane, sold under trademarks such as Lycra) can stretch at least 200% and is almost always used in small amounts with other fibres. A few percent in a tee helps it keep its shape around the chest and shoulders.
Gym t shirts for men: polyester absorbs very little moisture (a moisture regain of only 0.1 to 0.4%), so sweat moves through and evaporates rather than soaking in. That is why sports t shirts for men are usually polyester or poly blends. Wash them soon after use, since synthetic tees can hold odour.
Viscose and blends: viscose rayon is regenerated cellulose that drapes softly; it is common in printed and fashion tees but can lose shape if hung wet.

What GSM means on a T-shirt
GSM means grams per square metre, a way of expressing fabric weight. The formal test method for fabric mass per unit area is covered by the ASTM D3776 standard. In practice, knitted T-shirts commonly use fabric of roughly 120 to 180 GSM, according to a garment-industry reference.
| Weight feel | How it wears | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Lighter (lower GSM) | Thin, airy, may show the body underneath | Peak summer, layering |
| Middle | Balanced drape, holds shape | Everyday crew necks and polos |
| Heavier (higher GSM) | Structured, opaque, durable | Oversized tees, white tees that should not be see-through |
Not every brand lists GSM. When it is missing, hold the tee up to light in the store or read reviews about thickness. A white t shirt for men is where weight matters most: too thin and it turns see-through.
How a T-shirt should fit
Use these checks in the trial room.
- Shoulders: the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone (except on oversized tees, where it drops on purpose).
- Chest: the fabric should skim your chest, not stretch tight across it or hang loose like a tent.
- Sleeves: on a half sleeve tee, the hem should sit around mid-bicep and lie close to the arm.
- Length: the hem should end around the middle of your fly, covering your belt but not your back pockets.
- Neckline: a crew neck should sit close to the neck; pull it gently and check that it springs back.
Indian brands use their own size charts, so the same "M" can fit very differently between labels. Measure your chest and compare with each chart; our size guide explains how.
Colours and prints: white, black, maroon and more
- White t shirt for men: crisp with blue jeans, chinos or joggers. Choose a thicker fabric.
- Black t shirt for men: slimming and evening-ready. Wash inside out in cold water to slow fading.
- Navy and grey: the easiest colours to wear daily.
- Maroon tshirt for men: flatters warm and wheatish skin tones and pairs well with beige, grey and blue denim.
- Olive and earthy tones: natural partners for khaki and black.
Printed t shirts for men work best when the print is the only loud thing in the outfit. Graphic tees belong to weekends and travel; for anything smarter, choose plain colours. Stylish t shirts for men usually come down to fit and fabric rather than slogans.

Buying combos and brands
A tshirt combo for men (packs of two to five basics) is a sensible way to stock plain crew necks or polos in different colours. Check the fabric composition and size chart before buying in bulk, because a pack that fits wrong is several mistakes at once.
Brand context helps when you compare. Duke Fashions, based in Ludhiana, began making T-shirts in 1980. U.S. Polo Assn. is licensed worldwide by USPA Global Licensing, the for-profit subsidiary of the United States Polo Association (founded in 1890), with Arvind Fashions Limited as its India partner. Brand names tell you who makes the shirt, not whether it fits you, so always go back to your measurements.
Sweatshirts and layering
A sweat shirt for men is a heavier knit, usually with a soft brushed inside. It takes over from full sleeve tees when the weather cools. Wear a crew neck sweatshirt over a collared shirt for smart casual, or over a plain tee with jeans. Keep sweatshirts a size true to fit, not oversized, if you want them to look neat.
If you want a full pant shirt for men look for work instead, a collared shirt and formal trousers is the right switch.
Questions men ask
Which is better for men, polo or round neck T-shirt?
Neither is better; they do different jobs. A round neck (crew neck) tee is the most casual and easiest to layer. A polo t shirt has a collar, so it looks smarter and works for casual Fridays, family events and travel. Own a few of both, in plain colours, and choose by the occasion.
What GSM is good for a T-shirt?
Knitted T-shirts commonly use fabric of roughly 120 to 180 GSM, according to a garment-industry reference. Lighter fabric feels airy in summer but can look thin, while heavier fabric holds shape and is better for white tees and oversized fits. Treat GSM as a guide and check how the fabric feels.
Which T-shirt is best for the gym?
Choose polyester or a polyester blend for gym t shirts for men. Polyester absorbs very little moisture, so sweat does not soak in the way it does with cotton, and the shirt dries faster. Pick a fit that lets you move freely and wash it soon after each workout to prevent odour.
How should an oversized T-shirt fit?
An oversized tee should have dropped shoulder seams, a wide body and sleeves that reach near the elbow, but it should still end around the hip, not mid-thigh. Pair it with straight, relaxed or cargo bottoms. Avoid skinny jeans, which make the top look like it is drowning you.
How do I stop T-shirts from shrinking?
Check the care label and wash in cold or lukewarm water within the temperature shown on the washtub symbol. Avoid hot tumble drying, which is the most common cause of shrinking. Dry tees flat or on a hanger in the shade, and turn dark tees inside out to protect the colour.
Are full sleeve T-shirts good for summer?
They can be, if the fabric is light cotton or a breathable blend. A full sleeve t shirt also protects your arms from sun on bike rides or outdoor work. In very humid cities, though, a half sleeve tee or a linen shirt will usually feel cooler.
