Wedding Dress for Men: Groom and Guest Outfit Guide

An Indian wedding is four or five events, each with its own mood. This guide plans the right wedding outfit for men for every function, whether you are the groom, his brother or a guest.

Indian wedding dresses for men have to work hard. The same family may host a morning haldi in the courtyard, a mehndi lunch, a sangeet with dancing, the pheras at night and a reception in a banquet hall. One outfit cannot do all of that.

The easiest way to plan is with two questions: what is the function, and what is your role? The tables and lists below answer both, from the groom's sherwani to the guest's wedding suit for men, plus shoes and a short note on gifts.

Haldi and Mehndi: Daytime Looks

The haldi dress for men should be simple and washable. A haldi kurta for men in yellow, white or a pale pastel cotton, with a straight pajama or dhoti, is ideal. Expect turmeric everywhere, so skip silk and leather shoes. Kolhapuris or washable juttis are practical.

Mehndi is more colourful. Wear a green, teal, mustard or printed kurta, perhaps with a light linen bandi. Cotton and linen keep you comfortable at an outdoor afternoon event, and a short kurta with slim trousers looks modern. For styles and fabrics, see our kurta for men guide.

Sangeet: Dress to Dance

The sangeet dress for men can be the most fun outfit of the wedding. You will dance, sweat and sit on low seating, so pick something that moves:

  • An open Jodhpuri over a silk kurta.
  • A velvet bandhgala in wine, emerald or midnight blue for winter.
  • An asymmetric indo western kurta with slim trousers.
  • A short sherwani for the groom's brothers.

Sequins and mirror work are fine here in small doses. See more options in our indo western for men guide.

Wedding Outfits by Role: Groom, Brother, Guest

Groom

The groom's main ceremony outfit is usually a sherwani with safa, dupatta and mojaris. Choose ivory, gold, maroon or a colour that complements the bride. For the reception, change into a tuxedo, a dark 3 piece suit or a Jodhpuri. Our sherwani for men guide covers fit and accessories in detail.

Brother and close family

Brothers and cousins often coordinate. Pick one family colour or a shared fabric and vary the cut: achkans for fathers, bandhgalas or short sherwanis for brothers. Stay clearly below the groom in embroidery and avoid his exact colour.

Guest

A guest's marriage outfit for men should look festive and respectful without competing. A silk kurta set with bandi, a bandhgala, or a well-fitted dark suit all work. Avoid ivory and gold if the groom is likely to wear them, and avoid all-black at day ceremonies in families where it is considered inauspicious. If unsure, ask the hosts about a dress code.

Wedding Suit for Men: Reception and Western Weddings

For receptions, cocktail nights and church or court weddings, a wedding suit for men or coat pant is the right call. The options:

  • Two-piece suit: navy, charcoal or midnight blue for guests.
  • 3 piece suit for men wedding: the matching waistcoat adds formality. Britannica describes the traditional lounge suit as matching jacket, waistcoat and trousers.
  • Tuxedo: black or midnight blue with a shawl or peak lapel for the groom's reception.
  • Wedding blazer for men: a velvet or jacquard blazer with black trousers for cocktail parties.

Fit checks for shoulders, sleeves and trouser break are in our coat pant for men guide, and jacket options in the blazer for men guide.

Wedding Dress for Men in Summer

Summer weddings call for lighter fabrics and paler colours. Choose cotton silk, linen blends and raw silk over velvet and brocade. Ivory, mint, peach, powder blue and sage keep you looking fresh in the sun. Britannica notes linen absorbs and releases moisture quickly, which helps in heat, though it creases easily. For receptions, pick a lightweight wool or linen-blend suit, unlined if possible, and skip the waistcoat if the venue is outdoors.

How to Plan Your Wedding Wardrobe

  1. Get the function list and any dress codes from the family.
  2. Decide your role level: groom, close family or guest.
  3. Pick a colour story so outfits do not clash with each other in photos. Our colour combinations guide helps.
  4. Order custom pieces six to eight weeks ahead; buy ready-made three to four weeks ahead for alterations.
  5. Plan shoes per outfit: mojaris for the sherwani, loafers or Oxfords for suits, Kolhapuris for haldi.
  6. Do a full try-on a week before, including accessories.
  7. Pack a kit: safety pins, a small steamer, stain wipes, spare collar stays.

Wedding Shoes and a Note on Gifts

Wedding shoes for men should match the outfit's formality: embroidered mojaris for sherwanis, monk straps or loafers for Jodhpuris, patent or polished Oxfords for tuxedos. Break them in early.

If you are shopping for wedding gifts for men, such as for a groom friend, practical choices are a good grooming kit, a pocket square and brooch set, a quality shawl or a personalised watch box. These add to his wedding look without guessing his clothing size. For engagement and ring ceremony outfits, see the engagement dress for men guide.

Questions men ask

What is the best wedding dress for a groom?

Most Indian grooms wear a sherwani for the main ceremony, finished with a safa, dupatta and mojaris. For the reception, a tuxedo, a dark 3 piece suit or a Jodhpuri suit is common. Pick colours that complement the bride's outfits and plan custom pieces at least six weeks ahead.

What should a man wear to an Indian wedding as a guest?

A silk or silk-blend kurta set with a bandi, a bandhgala, or a well-fitted dark suit are all safe. Stay a notch less elaborate than the groom and avoid his likely colours, often ivory and gold. Check the invite or ask the hosts if there is a theme or dress code.

Is a 3 piece suit good for a wedding?

Yes, especially for receptions, cocktail nights and winter weddings. The matching waistcoat adds formality and lets you remove the jacket later and still look dressed. In summer or outdoor venues, a two-piece in a lighter fabric is more comfortable.

What should men wear for haldi?

Wear a yellow, white or pastel cotton kurta with a pajama or dhoti that you do not mind getting stained. Turmeric is hard to wash out, so avoid silk, embroidery and leather shoes. Kolhapuri sandals or washable juttis are the practical choice.

What should the groom's brother wear?

Brothers usually coordinate with the family in a shared colour or fabric and wear an achkan, bandhgala or short sherwani for the wedding. For the sangeet, an open Jodhpuri or indo western set works. Keep embroidery and colour clearly below the groom so he stands out in photos.

What colour is best for a wedding dress for men?

Ivory, gold, maroon, navy, bottle green and wine are reliable for evening weddings. For day and summer weddings, pastels like mint, peach and powder blue look fresh. Guests should avoid copying the groom's or bride's colour and may want to skip all-black at traditional day ceremonies.
